Battle of Fredericksburg 155th Anniversary

On Saturday, December 9th and Sunday, December 10th, join the National Park Service to commemorate the 155th Anniversary of the Battle of Fredericksburg with free historian-led programs.
This year’s programming combines traditional battle walks and more topical programs. See the full schedule of events below:
Saturday, December 9th:
11 a.m.: “Men fell like leaves in autumn:” The Fight for Prospect Hill
Explore the southern end of the Fredericksburg Battlefield, where Union troops were able to penetrate the Confederate defensive line. Program will last about 90 minutes. Meet at Tour Stop 6, Prospect Hill.
1:30 p.m.: Legends, Lives, and Monuments: Fredericksburg in Stories and Stone
The area around the famed Sunken Road is one of the most heavily commemorated landscapes in the park. Explore what these stone sentinels can tell us about the generations that created them as well as those they memorialize. Program will last about 90 minutes. Meet at the entrance to the Fredericksburg National Cemetery, 1013 Lafayette Boulevard, 22401.
4:00 p.m.: Eve of Battle: Sunset at Chatham
Watch the sun set on the terraces at Chatham as we explore the lead-up to the Battle of Fredericksburg—and the sense of foreboding that gripped soldiers on the eve of battle. Program will last about 60 minutes. Meet on the riverside terraces at Chatham Manor, 120 Chatham Ln., Fredericksburg, VA 22405. Bring a lawn chair.
Sunday, December 10th:
11:30 a.m.: In the Footsteps of the Irish Brigade
Walk through the streets of Fredericksburg in the footsteps of the legendary Irish Brigade, from the river crossing to the Sunken Road. Program will last about two hours. Meet at the City Dock, 201 Sophia Street. Plan to walk back to your car after the program.
2:00 p.m.: 155th Anniversary Remembrance Walk
Join park staff and the community for a walk of remembrance walk along the Sunken Road. Program will last about 60 minutes. Meet in the Sunken Road below Brompton, 1013 Lafayette Boulevard, 22401.
4:00 p.m.: Day’s End: A Walk through the National Cemetery
As daylight wanes, join us for a walk in the Fredericksburg National Cemetery. Hear stories of soldiers who gave their last full measure of devotion in December of 1862, and honor their legacies. Program will last about 60 minutes. Meet at the entrance to the Fredericksburg National Cemetery, 1013 Lafayette Boulevard, 22401.
